Palm Weaving

Join us Saturday April 12th for:

• Lazarus Saturday Liturgy: 8:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

• Palm Weaving: 2:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

  • We will have palm weaving lessons and will decorate the church

  • There will also a live donkey that the children will be able to ride! (120lb. max.)

Charity Opportunity!

(Goal Reached!)

We’ve reached our goal of 100 suitcases! God bless all who participated in this drive to help foster children! On May 18th we will be packing the suitcases! More information to follow!

Foster kids face multiple moves from home to home and are given a trash bag to carry their belongings.  

• Case for Character Program aims to give these kids hope and dignity by giving them their own suitcase with a few character-building items

• We are partnering with the local charity to raise money for a suitcase packing event on May 18, 2025 here at St. Basil’s church!

• Presentation by “Forever Kids” then packing the suitcases with a toiletries bag, card and spiritual book for delivery to SD foster kids

Hello St Basil College and recent graduates!

As our church has grown over the years we now have enough college and recent graduates to actually create a group at St Basil's! The church will provide a venue for fellowship, spiritual growth during this unique time in your life and fun!

We will have our kick-off gathering on Sunday, March 23rd at Del Mar Beach - more specifics to follow but see the flyer below! Big things planned!

“Preserve Them, O Lord” is an excellent resource you can use for marriage and family life enrichment. It gives you insightful guidance, supplemented by

• workbook exercises that help you understand yourself and your partner;

• over 70 pages of supplemental readings on topics both spiritual and practical;

• quotes from Scripture, the Fathers,

• and the wedding liturgy illuminating the patristic view of love, intimacy, and marriage.

We reviewed this book back in 2020 and it was helpful for those who are married but also for those getting married soon.

St. Basil’s Bible Study: Saturday Nights (5:45pm - 6:45 pm)

This week we will review the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Church at Thessalonica. The young Thessalonian church is going through persecutions and difficult times! —They endured faithfully but they got anxious about the Lord’s second coming.  Some thought it already occurred without their reward! Was all this suffering in vain? —St. Paul assures them in this short epistle that Christ will come in Glory and His glory will be in His saints!

This epistle is only three chapters so read it ahead of time and come to discuss!

Building Renovations!

There will be some much-needed renovations for some aging elements in our church building! Phase one will include improvements to both downstairs bathrooms and the kitchen area, with future plans for ceiling tiles, fresh paint, overall clean-up and organization, and other needed improvements to be announced in the future!

These improvements will enhance our use of the building and add value to it should we choose to sell it.

St. Basil’s Bible Study: Saturday Nights (5:45pm - 6:45 pm)

This week we will review the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Church at Thessalonica. St. Paul is concerned about the pressure and persecution this young Thessalonian church is going through and sends St. Timothy to encourage and strengthen them.

Timothy returns to Corinth from Macedonia (Acts 18:5) with a favorable report, and St. Paul writes this first epistle to them.

It’s only four chapters! Read it ahead of time and come to discuss!

Junior High-king!

The Junior High School class, along with servants and parents, had an amazing hike at Torrey Pines on Saturday! The weather and company were perfect, thank God!

There will be some much-needed renovations for some aging elements in our church building! Phase one will include improvements to both downstairs bathrooms and the kitchen area, with future plans for ceiling tiles, fresh paint, overall clean-up and organization, and other needed improvements to be announced in the future!

These improvements will enhance our use of the building and add value to it should we choose to sell it.

Lasagna Love!

On Sunday, many got together to prepare ten trays of lasagnas for the many single moms living in San Diego and are homeless. They were delivered to the Rachel Women’s Shelter in downtown San Diego. God bless all those who worked so hard with their labor and bringing supplies to provide a little comfort to those in great need.

RENOVATIONS!

Some badly needed improvements are underway at church and you will be very happy with the results in the coming weeks. More information is coming and opportunities to help in this effort!

Men’s Fellowship!

We had a wonderful time together watching a very competitive AFC Championship game! There was plenty of great food and fellowship. We also had a discussion on “Spiritual Athleticism”

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

Keeping in mind these colder evenings, we will be gathering some used (but usable) blankets, jackets, socks and other clothing that might be lonely and unused in the closet. A bin is located on the first floor next to the stairs until January. We will be distributing these to our brothers and sisters who have need of them on the streets this season. May God bless you all. (If the bin is full, kindly place your item on the floor next to the bin.)

Message from Fr. Michael Maximous

On behalf of my entire family, I wish to thank all of the St. Basil family for your outpouring of love and care after the passing of my father. It is a blessing to serve with all of you and we are honored to be part of this blessed community.

Blessed Feasts of the Church Calendar

January is truly a blessed and joyful time and a wonderful way to start the New Year! During this month, we celebrate the glorious birth of our Saviour in the Nativity, the fulfilling of the law in the Circumcision of Christ, the annual Commemoration of St. Basil the Great (our patron), the Theophany (Baptism of Christ), and the Wedding of Cana of Galilee.

We must always keep at the forefront of our memory, the words and works of our Lord Jesus Christ that He accomplished for our sakes and because He loves us beyond words. This doesn’t happen on accident: we must be proactive in having spiritual memory because it’s critical to our spiritual life.

Participating in the liturgical services throughout the church Calendar is an easy way to have healthy spiritual memory which can be life altering and holds many benefits!

It will allow us to live a life of thanksgiving, contentment and joy as we remember what the Lord has done for us. Remembering gives us a life of faith as we recall the wonders our Lord has performed in the bible and throughout our 2,000-year history. When we remember God’s power, we are encouraged when faced with daunting tasks and remind ourselves that nothing is impossible with God. When we fall, we remember God’s unshakable love for us. When we stand, we remember it’s by His mercy.

So let us remember: by proactively participating in church services, reading scripture, fellowship with one another, confession, and sprinkling God’s works in our conversations with friends, strangers, children and family. May the Lord always cause us to remember His greatness, His ever-presence in our lives and His love for us!

We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what deeds You did in their days! ~ Psalm 44:1

We had a wonderful time at the Nativity picnic on Sunday! There was plenty of fellowship, fun and food. We even had a live performance from a couple of our talented youth!

Keeping in mind these colder evenings, we will be gathering some used (but usable) blankets, jackets, socks and other clothing that might be lonely and unused in the closet. A bin is located on the first floor next to the stairs until January. We will be distributing these to our brothers and sisters who have need of them on the streets this season. Homeless Care Packages!

Many of the youth and servants spent Saturday morning preparing care packages for the homeless. The care packages are in a box downstairs. Be sure to pick up a few and hand out as you see the need!

PREPARATION FOR BAPTISM (CATECHISM) CLASSES

Join us on ONLINE on Monday nights at 8:00 PM for Baptism preparation classes. Visit www.stbasil.net/baptism for more information. These classes are open for: 

• Anyone interested in becoming members of the Coptic Orthodox Church, 

• Those recently baptized (within the last few years), or 

• Simply anyone else seeking to better understand the basics of the Christian Faith and History. 

Together, we will review the importance of baptism and its impact, the Sacraments, the inspiring church history, the Orthodox Creed, the Holy Bible, Orthodox Prayer and Spiritual life, and Church traditions.   Reading material will be provided for those who wish to attend.  To register for this class, please contact Fr.
